most people credit loudin wainwright iii with the eponymous "swimming song" but it was actually his wife, kate mcgarrigle and sister in law anna that did it best. i know this because my mom played it repeatedly on hot august evenings while she cooked dinner. kate died just a few months ago and it warms my heart to know that she was surrounded by loudin, rufus and martha who sang to her until the very end. i am so fortunate to have this song sung by kate and anna on vinyl because i have a feeling that harper will master swimming this summer. and when she does, you can bet that i will be playing this song in the kitchen while cooking dinner.
