louis cannizzaro
when harper was born i would go into this card shop down the street. she'd sleep in her big orange stroller we called "the great pumpkin", and i'd read every card in the store, using my foot on the wheel to gently rock her back and forth. i came across this series of cards by a guy named louis. they all seemed to make me cry. i heard he was coming to town so i called up his agent and asked him if he'd like to go to dinner with me. we ate at jax. he didn't say much and spent most of the meal drawing on the butcher paper-covered table with crayons. he drew buildings and stars and hearts. when he finished, he stood up and ripped the piece from the table and said, "for your daughter."
i know it's around here somewhere.
