i moved to new york in 1999 and, as you can imagine, had myself quite a few unforgettable experiences. one such experience took place on a hot, hot manhattan day up on "tar beach", which is a new yorker's way of describing their rooftop. i was on christopher street in the west village at my girlfriend lee wagner's place ("wags", we call her). lee's friend, kate, came over for a while and as we talked, tanned, and sipped cold beers, i began to realize that i was in a perfect moment. the contagion that took place between us was the best i have ever experienced: razor sharp wits, cutting kindly at one moment and then nicking away at the next. and the laughter, god the laughter. i have never, ever laughed so hard as i did that day. the whole experience bred this instant, deep affection and respect for one another. i haven't seen kate for a while but i still carry this strong emotion for that day and in particular, for kate-though for wags too, of course. it comes as no surprise to me that just a year later, kate rose to fame on showtime's, the 'l word', as the elusive, unshakable 'shane'.
i love her. she is a bone sister, and i'd give almost anything for another day like that.
