air traffic control

i wake up with a song in my head each morning. today, i woke up with a 1978 favorite, 'sweet dreams," by air supply. and although i feathered my hair to this song many a time, it took this morning to catch on to what i have realized is a gross, gross error.

here's a quick synopsis of the song: there's this guy and he has it bad for this girl and is in need of her attention (isn't it always the case?). the guy wants her but there is some hidden force that prevents them from having full access. she seems to be gone at one point and he is far away at another-it isn't quite clear. she can't call. he won't write a proper letter. it's basically romeo and juliet here, folks.

what is clear is that he must reach out to her in his dreams...and ride the skies to do so.

but if you'll notice, as the chorus tells us below, if she's closing her eyes and he's riding around in his own dreams, how are they ever going to hook up? i think he either needs to be riding the skies in her dreams or invite her over to his cloud before he closes his eyes.

see for yourself:

This is the time when you need a friend
You just need someone near
I'm not looking forward to the night
I'll spend thinking of you when you're not here

How many times will I think of the things
I'd like to do
Always denied the right
To live my life the way I want
I want to share it with you

[chorus]
Close your eyes
I want to ride the skies in my sweet dreams
Close your eyes
I want to see you tonight in my sweet dreams

I'll think of your kiss as the days roll by
And I'll write the words you love
And what I can't say in a letter
Will just have to wait till I get home

There's not much time to tell you
Half the things that I should
Only that I'm so glad I fell in love with you
And I'd do it again if I could

[chorus]

Sleep like a child resting deep
You don't know, what you give me
I keep for these moments alone

[chorus 4x]
